Vasantgad Fort:-

Vasantgad was built by Shilahar King Bhoj. Shivaji Maharaj conquered it on 1659. Later, Rajaram Maharaj stayed for some time on this fort when he returned from Jinji. Aurangzeb captured this fort in 1700 and named it “Kili-da-Fateh”. The Marathas got the fort back in 1706.

Vasai Fort:-

Vasai Fort, Mumbai is very large. There main gate of this fort leads to a small courtyard from where one can climb the ramparts to take a look around which reveals the numerous old structures of the fort which has now turned to ruins. Though most of the part of this fort has turned into ruins still the floor plans give a good idea of the structures that were built by Portuguese. There are certain well-preserved facades, which are very well decorated with carved stones. But there are some, which have weathered beyond recognition. There are three chapels inside the fort, which are still recognizable. The southernmost of these has a well-preserved barrel vaulted ceiling.

Past Of Details:-

The fort is comparatively small one. In 1414 Sardar Bhandari Bhendale built this fort. In 1530 Sultan of Gujrat captured the Fort. In 1534, after knowing significance of this fort, it was conquered and reconstructed by Portuguese, which took ten years. The Fort is decagonal with bastion at each of the corner. The fort is one km length and width too. The ramparts are very strong and about 30 m high and 5 m wide. Some of the bastions are named as Bahri Buruz, Kalyan Buruz, Phateh Buruz, Kailas Buruz, and Darya Buruz. There is the fortress in the central part. There are entrances to the fort from both seaside and landside. There are secret passages too. Lot of water is available on the fort. It is surrounded by swamp on three sides and sea on one side. There are bridges at Sopar and Gokhrava.

Vasai was built with an intention to keep a watch on the region of Saashti. In 1737, the Marathas tried to capture the fort, but failed. Later Bajirao Peshwa chose Chimajiappa for the mission. He planned for it and decided to attack from swamp side of the fort. They broke the rampart on the northern side. The army broke inside roaring ‘Har Har Mahadev’. Unfortunately mines burst late and many soldiers died. There was a heavy skirmish. The war started on 2nd May 1739 and took two days. 800 Portuguese lost their lives in the war. The ammunition ended and finally the Portuguese surrendered to Chimajiappa. Women and children of the enemy were allowed to go out safely without any harm.

In 1780 British started making plans to capture the fort. At that time Visaji Krishna Lele was the chief of the fort. Colonel Goddard was appointed as chief of the British army. He decided to attack the fort from both the seaside and landside. Colonel Hartley was to attack from Kalyan and Colonel Goddard from seaside. Goddard was to beleaguer the fort. Care was taken that the enemy would not get the help from Pune side. Nana Phadanavis sent Anandrao Raaste to Gokhrava village, which is 8 km away from Vasai. On 23rd October, army of Chimaji Panse and Bhavani Shivram started for Vasai via Talegaon and were having gunnery with them. There was shortage of food and treasury on the fort. Goddard was ready with the cannons. On 28th of October he started firing. The Marathas also started firing from the bastions. The British destroyed Gokhrava and Sopar bridges. On 7th December there was a big explosion on the fort. The war continued till 9th and 10th December. On 10th December, 200 Marathas made an attempt to pass Gokhrava, but it was unsuccessful. Finally on 10th December the British captured the fort.

Visapur Fort:-

Visapur fort (also called Visapoor fort) is a hill fort near Visapur village in Maharashtra, India. It is a part of the Lohagad-Visapur fortification.

Past Of Details:-

Lohgad and Visapur lay in Nane Maval. This region came under Nizamshahi after dissolution of Bahmani rule. It went into the hands of Mughals in the treaty of Mahuli, between Shahajiraje and Mughals. Seeing that the Mughals were not able to keep a control over the region, Shivaji Maharaj captured almost all the forts here till 1660. However, he lost the fort again to Mughals in the treaty of Purandar in 1665. However Aurangzeb broke the treaty. In 1682, Shahbuddin, a Mughal Sardar invaded the region, and killed 60 Marathas in an anguish. However Marathas escaped to Visapur. They were chased, but moved in time to the village of Kusapur. On 4th march 1818 Colonel Prother captured Visapur, and the next day Lohgad fell into his hands.

The mountain of Visapur is significant, as Bhaje caves have been carved out in the same mountain. The destruction caused by Mughals and English is clearly evident from the injuries on the Bhaje caves. These beautiful caves could have been bombarded by cannon balls, because much of their part has been broken.

Vasota Fort

Vasota Fort (also called Vyaghragad) is located in Satara district in the Indian state of Maharashtra.[1]. It was famously defended by Tai Telin a mistress of Pant Pratinidhi a killedar of the fort when he was captured. Vasota fort is attributed to the Kolhapur Shilahara Raja Bhoja II (1178–1193) of Panhala.

Past Of Details:-

We have to go back to the times of Sage Vasishtha to know how exactly old is the fort. It’s believed that a disciple of Vasishtha, a sage by the name Agasti, came to reside on a mountain on the banks of river Koyana. He named the mountain after his mentor. Later the mountain was fortified and converted into a military station. In the course of time, fort Vasishtha was pronounced as ‘Vasota’.

This fort is believed to belong to the Shilahar dynasty era, and probably named Vasota due to the name Vasantgad given to it during that era. According to ancient scriptures Shivaji took Vasota after his successful raid on Javli region. But it is untrue. Shivaji took Javli and other forts in the Konkan region but Vasota eluded him. When Shivaji was trapped on Panhalgad he dispatched a battalion from his main army and won Vasota on June 6, 1660. Later in 1679, 26,000 rupees were found on the fort. Among the prisoners caught in 1661 in Rajapur, Faren and Samuel were kept imprisoned on the fort.

Later in 1706, Tai Telini brought the fort under her control. The very next year Peshwa Senapati Bapu Gokhale fought with her. After 8-10 months of intense battle, Bapu Nadkarni conquered the fort.

Ratangad is a fort in Ratan Wadi, Maharashtra, India, overlooking the locale of Bhandardara, one of the oldest artificial catchment area. The fort is about 2000 years old.

Ratangad has a natural rock peak with a cavity in it at the top which is called ‘Nedhe’ or ‘Eye of the Needle’.

Ratangad was captured by Chhatrapati Shivaji Raje Bhosle and was one of his favorites. The base village Ratanwadi has a Amruteshwar temple which is famous for its carvings. The fort is origin for the river Pravara/Amrutvahini. The Bhandardara dam(arthar dam) is built on this river.

The main attraction at Ratanwadi is the Amruteshwar temple dating back to the Hemadpant Era – roughly from the eighth century.

The base village Ratanwadi is approached by boat from Bhandardara. By boat, it is a 6 kms journey and further it is a 4 kms walk till Ratanwadi.

Ratnadurga Fort:-

Past Details :-

Ratnadurg was built during the reign of Bahamanis. In 1670 Shivaji Maharaj won this fort from Adilshah. In 1790 Dhondu Bhaskar Pratinidhi reconstructed this fort in 1790 and made it stronger.

Rajgad Fort

Rajgad:- literally meaning King of forts, one of the forts of Maharashtra state in India. Situated in the Pune district, the fort is 1318 meters above sea level.

Formerly known as Murumdev, it was capital of the Maratha Kingdom (Hindavi Swarajya) ruled by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj for almost 26 years, after which he moved to Raigad fort and made that his capital.

Treasure found on adjacent Torna Fort was used to fortify this hill.

Past Details :

1. James Dougals in his ‘Book of Bombay’ writes, Rajgad and Torna occupy an unchallangable position and are uncongquerable thus facilitating Hindu King Shivaji Maharaj to have a wide scope to expand boundries of his kingdom.

2. Saki Mustaodakhan in his novel called ‘Masire Alamgire’ narrates about Rajgad as :

A very tall fort which justifies itsposition and excellence amongst all. Its huge size covers a diameter of almost 24 miles at its base. One cannot imagine its hughness and strength. It is believed that only wind can roam around and water can pass through the thick forest surrounding the fort. Else, it is very difficult for anybody to pass through the thick jungles.

3. Mohammad Hashim Khalikhan writes in his novel called ‘Muntakhabullubab-E-

Mohammed Shahi’ as it is very difficult to explain/put in words the greatness of

Rajgad fort. Its height and size is so great that it makes our heart repress. The

down underneath the earth who carries the portion of this fort must be finding it

equally painful. The thick forest surrounding the fort has poisionous snakes and terrifying founa in abundance. Hence, in view of the above, it is very difficult for anyone even to lay a siege.

The history of this fort however dates back to approximately 2000 years wherein one can find evidence of this mountain range in existence. History also has evidence that saint Brahmarshi lived on this mountain range and also subsequent establishment of ‘Shri. Brahmarshi Devasthan’ which confirms its vintage existence.

Rajgad was initially known as ‘Murumbdev’ during the Bahamani regime. However, during the year 1490, the founder of Nizamshahi of Ahmednagar, Ahmed Bahiri had conquered many forts in western Maharashtra which included Valeghat and many others in South Konkan, and thus established a supremacy over the region. It was during the same period that Ahmed Bahiri established control over Murumbdev fort. His task was simplified by the In-charge of the fort, who extended unconditional surrender to Ahmed Bahiri. Thus, Nizamshahi was established on the fort and later for about 125 long years there was no attack on the fort. Subsequently, the reins of the fort were transferred from Nizamshahi to Adilshahi. During Nizamshahi, Baji Haibatrao Shilimkar and his father Rudraji Naik controlled the operations of the fort however, as per instructions of Malik Amber, the operations were handed over to Sardar Haibatkhama of Adilshahi dynasty.

Later during 1630 the fort was again under the control of Nizamshahi. Shahaji Raje`s officer Sonaji started looking into the affairs of this fort. Later, the fort was attacked by Adilshah of Vijapur during which Sonaji was injured. Hence, Balaji Naik Shilimkar ventured ahead to protect Murumbdev fort along with a division of troops. He too was injured during the clashes. However, he was duly honored by Shahaji Raji for the performance in the task.

It’s hard to find clear evidence as to when Shivaji Maharaj established control over Murumbdev fort. However, inferences can be drawn against the following two notations as under:

1. In the 10th chapter of the literature of ‘Shivcharitra’, says – Shivaji Maharaj established control over ‘Shahamrug’ mountain range and later constructed a building over it.

2. In an historical novel ( commonly referred to as ‘Bakhar’ ) written by Krishnaji Anant Sabhasad says that, there was a mountain called Murabad over which settlement took place and was later renamed as Rajgad. The fort has four ‘machis’. It seems that Sabhasad has counted even the Citadel as a machi.

However, somewhere during the period from 1646 to 1647, Shivaji Maharaj conquered this fort along with Torna. He undertook major reconstruction work of the fort. It included construction of curtain wall for the three machis and later named them as Suvela, Sanjivani and Padmavati; construction of a building on the main fort and later renaming it as Rajgad; huge plantations of Mango trees in a village called Khedbare near Shirval were taken up and a market place was setup. Later the village name was changed to Shivapur.

• Year 1660 marked the beginning of wars and battles for this fort. Under instructions of Mughal King Aurangazeb, Shahistekhan attacked Shivaji Maharaj`s kingdom. Through available sources it is understood that when Shahistekhan summoned his forces to conquer Rajgad, troops destroyed few villages near the fort but did not attempt to attack the fort. In due course, on 6th April 1663, Shivaji Maharaj raided Shahistekhan`s regime and returned back to Rajgad.

• In the year 1665, Maratha kingdom was attacked again by Mughal Sardar Mirzaraje jaisingh. Daudkhan and Raisingh were nominated to capture forts. Vide their assigned task; on 30th April 1665 Mughal troops attacked Rajgad. There was strong opposition from Marathas which ultimately proved too strong for Mughals. Hence, Mughals had to move back.

• Rajgad was one among those were retained by Shivaji Maharaj`s, after surrender of 23 forts to Mughals as per the conditions in ‘Treaty of Purandar’ with Mughal representative Jaisingh.

• After the escape from Agra, on 12th Sept 1666, Maharaj arrived safely on Rajgad.

• On 24th Feb 1670 Rajaram was born on Rajgad Fort.

• In the year 1670, Shivaji Maharaj summoned Tanaji Malusare to capture Sinhagad fort from this very Rajgad.

• During 1671-72, Shivaji Maharaj confirmed Raigad as the capital base of Hindavi Swarajya` and shifted all operations from Rajgad fort to Raigad.

• After the sad demise of Shivaji Maharaj on 3rd April1680, marked a downfall of Swarajya. On 11th March 1689, Sambhji Maharaj (Son of Shivaji Maharaj) was nabbed and killed by Mughals. Later, Mughals marched triumph and captured many forts. Rajgad was one among them which fell in hands of Kishoresingh Hada (a Mughal Sardar). It was in June 1689; Aurangazeb nominated Abdulkhairkhan to look after the operations of the fort. However, the news of death of Sambhaji Maharaj had not reached Marathas hence their morale was high. Marathas later gathered near foothills of the fort and managed to capture the fort on their own vigor.

• In January 1694, secretary of Hindavi Swarajya, Shankarji Narayan advised/instructed Deshmukhs of Kanad valley to continue looking after the affairs of the region comprising this fort by virtue of their performance in defence of this fort against Mughals.

• On 11th Nov 1703, Aurangajeb personally ventured to the task of capturing this fort along with his army. He started his journey from Pune however; it proved to be tough for him. The approach to Rajgad was very tough / difficult as about 8 miles of stretch was through ghats. Aurangazeb summoned thousands of masons and equipments to reconstruct the road. However, he was not successful in doing so hence equipment & raw material were left deserted. Ultimately on 2nd December 1703 Aurangazeb reached near Rajgad. He arranged his troops and artillery to attack the fort. He constructed an equally high scaffolding adjacent to it and placed cannons over it. He started attacking the fort while Tarbitkhan and Hamibuddinkhan continued to attack from Padmawati Machi end. The battle continued for 2 long months and later on 4th Feb1703 Aurangazeb managed to capture it. He appointed Iradatkhan to look after the operations of the fort and renamed the fort as ‘Nabishahagad’.

• On 27th May 1707, Gunaji Sawant and Pantaji Shivdev jointly attacked Rajgad and by capturing it, the same got registered on the roll book of Marathas.

• Later Shahu Maharaj took control over the fort and funded Rs.300/- for Suvela Machi and Rs.100/- for Sanjivani Machi to take up re-construction activity.

• During Peshwe regime, the operations of the fort were being looked after by their secretaries. Due to unstable economic conditions which frequently prevailed during Peshwe regime, also led to a delay to the salaries of their staff. There is also an evidence regarding non payment of salaries for almost an year on Rajgad fort during such an economic crisis.

• Later the fort was passed on to the hands of ‘Bhor Trust’. The Trust appointed six officers to look after the fort; Sarnoubat Shilimkar to look after Suvela Machi, Sarnoubat Pawar to look after Padmawati Machi, Sarnoubat Khopade to look after Sanjivani Machi. They were being assisted by many junior officers.

Peth Fort:-

Peth Fort, also called as Kotligad, is one of the major tourist attractions near Karjat. The fort is built on a cone-shaped hill from where the Western Ghats, Wandre Khind Pass and Bhimashankar can be seen. The fort derives its name from its location in the Peth village which is situated at the foothills of the fort.

Past Details :

Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb ordered his warriors ‘Abdul Kadar’ and ‘Ali Biradarkani’ in November 1684 to capture the forts belonging to Sambhaji’s empire. Abdul Kadar had a fair idea of importance of possession of this fort. Control over fort means control over Kokan region. He made a concrete plan to conquer the fort. In his efforts, he went in the surrounding region and kept people thereof as his servants to get inside information from them. As soon as he came to know that arms and weapons were traded here, his group of 300 gunmen reached the base in November 1684. The Marathas forced most of them back, but some still managed to reach the ‘Magarkot Dwar’ and started shouting ‘open the door’. The Marathas inside the fort opened the door on the assumption that these shouting Mughals were ‘own men’ who came for picking up the weapons for war. The Mughals immediately rushed in and the battle started. They could win the battle with help of ‘Mankoji Pandhere’.

The next day, the Marathas surrounded the fort. Abdul Kadar’s position became critical. The ammunition in the fort was destroyed and used in the battle. Although the Mughals were occupying the fort, they were helpless as the Marathas looted ammunition and food sent to them at their base camp, on its way. About 10-12 days later, Abdul Aziz Khan sent his son Abdul Khan to help Abdul Kadar. But Maratha Sardar Naroji Tryambak was hiding in the valley to prevent him to approach the fort. When another war broke, the Marathas lost and Naroji was killed. Ehmat Khan capitulated Naroji and hung his head right in the middle of the road. Now, the Mughals had total control over the fort. The Golden keys of main door of the fort were sent to Aurangzeb as a symbol of victory. After confirming the victory, he rewarded Abdul Khan. The Mughals renamed the fort as ‘Miftahulfateh’, meaning victory key.

The Marathas continued their efforts to conquer the fort. In December 1684, the Marathas tried to stop Mughals moving towards the fort. Seven thousand Marathas constituted a strong battalion and fought with Mahamatkhan. But success was far away. In April 1685, 700 Marathas attacked again. About 200 of them climbed the fort with the help of rope ladders. Battle started between two parties and a lot of blood shaded. The goddess of victory again favored the Mughals and the Marathas lost the battle and the fort.

After 130 years in November 1817, Bapurao, a Maratha Sardar with Bajirao II fought with British and won the fort.

Palgad Fort about one and a half acres in area, stands on the crest of a high hill on the north-west boundary of Khed. In 1862, it was in ruins, with nine old useless guns, of which there is no trace today. It is said to have been built by Shivaji and was taken in 1818 by the British. At the foot near Dapoli, lies the village of Palil (Palgad).
